| Common Name: (Red) cedar, mumin, manin, mugurpul, wootan, Australian red cedar, woolia, woota, polai, wanya. | ||
| Distribution: In Australia from Ulladulla, southern NSW coast to Atherton Tableland, north Qld. Also in PNG, India and Indomalaysia. | ||
| Habitat: Sub-tropical rainforest and scrubby areas, often bordering rivers and stream banks. | ||
| Form: Tall deciduous tree growing to 55m with a cylindrical, sometimes buttrresed or flanged trunk. Heartwood of rich, red colour. | ||
| Leaves: Compound, alternate, pinnate, leaflets up to 20. Leaflets are ovate to lanceolate, curved, 5-14 cm long. | ||
| Flower: White, five petals, in large terminal panicles. Perfumed, flowering October to November. | ||
| Fruit: Capsule brown, splitting into five segments when dry. Ripe, January to March. | ||
| Garden Use: Fast growing tree for parks or large areas. However young trees often suffer from Cedar Tip Moth depredation. | ||
| Edible?: No. | ||
| Propagation: Fresh seeds germinate easily. | ||
| Comments: Now rare because of timber exploitation. Red cedar is a highly prized cabinet timber. During the early European settlement of Australia, cedar getters preceded farmer settlers in many districts. | ||
