Common Name: Benne(t)ts ash, crow's or crow's-feet ash, Bennet's silver ash, she-teak, stavewood, bogum-bogum.
Distribution: Endemic Australian species, grows from Clarence River, New South Wales to Fraser Island, Queensland.
Habitat: Sub-tropical and dry rainforests, margins of open forests and riverine scrub.
Form: Tall tree growing to 40 m; bark grey and wrinkled.
Leaves: Compound, opposite, pinnate, with 3-10 leaflets opposite on rachis. Leaflets are glossy, dark green above, paler below. Leaflets are ovate or elliptical, shortly pointed at apex, 8-15 cm long.
Flower: Cream, cup-shaped, in panicles from upper leaf axil or terminal. Flowers snell like fresh dough. Flowering period, August to October.
Fruit: Capsule, dark brown, woody, bluntly prickled, separating into 5 segments, 5-8 cm long. Seeds, 10-15 winged. Ripe November to February.
Garden Use: A dense tree, conspicuous when in bloom, suitable for parks or large blocks. Very hardy.
Edible?: No.
Propagation: Grow from fresh seed.
Comments: Named after George Bennett an amateur naturalist and early supporter of the Sydney Botanic Gardens.
