Common Name: Hairy walnut, rusty walnut, white bark walnut, possum apple, red apple.
Distribution: Endemic Australian species, ranging from the Bellinger R. NSW to Bulburin, central Qld.
Habitat: moist sub-tropical rainforest and along moist, scrubby water courses.
Form: Medium tree growing up to 25 m. but mostly seen as a small, bushy tree. Branchlets, petioles and terminal buds densely rusty hairy.
Leaves: Simple, alternate with blade, dark glossy green above, paler and hairy, often rusty below. Leaves are variable, elliptical to obovate or broadly-elliptical, shortly drawn to a blunt point at the apex. Leaves, 6-18 cm long.
Flower: Whitish, in panicles from leaf axils. Flowering period, March to May.
Fruit: Drupe, yellowish turning red, large, globular up to 5 cm in diameter. Seed, one, 3-4 cm in diameter. Ripe, November to February. Fruits are produced every 2 or 3 years.
Garden Use: A very attractive tree for a semi-shaded moist area of the garden. Attractive tub-plant and can be used indoors.
Edible?: Aborigines roasted the seeds, then pounded and soaked them in running water before eating them.
Propagation: Seeds should soaked to remove flesh before sowing. Germination slow.
